The Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association (KFDA), through the Kansas Funeral Directors Association Foundation, awards scholarships to qualified students who are enrolled in mortuary science school.

Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the KFDA Education and Scholarship Committee. Scholarships are awarded in the spring and fall. The application deadlines are March 30th and September 30th.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicant must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours in a mortuary science education program at an accredited mortuary science school for the semester for which the scholarship will be applied.

Applicant must have at least one, but no more than two semesters of mortuary science school remaining following the application deadline.

Applicant must be properly registered with the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership qualities, financial need and special abilities. Consideration will also be given to whether the applicant intends to practice in Kansas.

The applicant must submit a written application including a copy of the applicant’s college transcript and the previous year’s tax return. Applications should be typewritten.

Application should include a typewritten statement of their reasons for seeking financial assistance, why they are interested in the funeral profession as an occupation, and what experience or exposure you have had with the funeral profession.

Application deadlines are March 30th and September 30th.

Embalmer

-Associate of Arts degree in Mortuary Science with at least 30 semester hours in Mortuary Science at an accredited mortuary college.

-Pass the written national examination administered by the Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards after earning an AA degree in mortuary science.

-Serve an apprenticeship working on a full-time basis under the supervision of a licensed Embalmer. Must be completed within two years of passing written examination.

Funeral Director

-Applicant must possess not less than two years of general college education with at least 60 semester hours to include:

            6 semester hours in Social Science
            4 semester hours in Natural Science
            6 semester hours in Humanities
            2 semester hours in Business
            2 semester hours in Fine Arts
            40 semester hours of applicants choice

-Serve an apprenticeship as a licensed Assistant Funeral Director for no less than one year under the supervision of a licensed Kansas Funeral Director working on a full-time basis. Applicant must interview successfully with the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts at conclusion of apprenticeship.

-Pass a written examination administered by the Kansas State Board of
Mortuary Arts.

Continuing Education Requirements 

Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer must complete 12 hours of approved continuing education every two years.

Up to six hours of continuing education credit can be carried over to the licensees next licensing period if the credit is reported to the Board of Mortuary Arts before the expiration of the licensees current licensure renewal.
