Presenter: David G. Hicks
This seminar provides attendees with several reasons to use the restricted cervical method (RCI) of injection. The different types of cases presented in this lecture include: edemic, trauma, jaundiced and delayed viewing. Real case examples help to demonstrate how useful the RCI technique is for the challenges with which the embalmer is faced. Solutions and types of chemicals to use round out this discussion.
Anatomy of the Restricted Cervical Injection
A detailed description of Restricted Cervical Injection (RCI) will be presented using images of a cadaver to demonstrate the Vascular anatomy, other routes of blood supply to the head, the importance of leaving superior placed arterial tubes open and why it restricts and doesn’t eliminate blood flow to the head.
Advantages of using RCI will be discussed as well as when to use the RCI method of injection in edemic, trauma, jaundice, normal and delayed viewing cases.
Embalming Unknown
This part of the program explores the art and the science of embalming. What we don’t know about the deceased... “embalming unknowns” can affect the embalming outcomes and perhaps the personal health of the embalmer. Some of these unknowns are cause of death, comorbidities, time intervals between death and embalming. David will discuss these and other unknowns and how we might learn some of the unknowns to effectively embalm the deceased and thus better serve our families.
Approved for four hours of continuing education credit from the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts.
